"How much does digital marketing cost?" is the wrong first question
It is like asking what a building costs. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you are building, where, how fast, and to what standard. A far more useful question is: what work is included, and what result is it designed to produce?
This guide explains the variables so you can compare proposals properly and build a budget that survives contact with reality.

Variable 1 — Scope of channels
A single-channel engagement is a fraction of the work of an integrated programme. Search, paid media, social, content, website, email, WhatsApp and analytics each carry their own execution load. More channels means more specialists, more assets and more coordination.
Start with the one or two channels closest to your buyer's decision, not with everything.
Variable 2 — Competitive intensity
Ranking a niche B2B service in North Bengal is a different task from ranking a D2C category nationally. Competition determines how much content, how many links, how much technical work and how much ad spend it takes to move.
Ask any agency to show you the competitive landscape for your keywords before agreeing scope. Tools like Google Keyword Planner and Search Console give you a starting picture for free.

Variable 3 — Content volume and production quality
Content is usually the largest recurring input. Twelve well-researched pages a quarter is a different commitment from two. Video raises it further — shooting, editing, versioning for each platform.
Be realistic about what you need to publish to compete, then resource that honestly rather than under-resourcing everything.
Variable 4 — Media spend versus management
Ad budget and agency fee are separate lines. A common error is comparing one proposal's management fee against another's total including media. Always ask for them split.
As a planning principle, media spend should be sized to the value of a customer and your close rate, not to a round number that felt comfortable.

Variable 5 — Website and technical foundation
If the site is slow, thin or broken, every rupee spent on traffic underperforms. Some engagements need a foundation phase before growth work makes sense. That phase is one-time but unavoidable — see website development.
Variable 6 — Engagement model
- Retainer — ongoing, best for SEO, content and always-on paid media
- Project — website builds, brand identity, audits
- Performance-linked — some upside sharing, only workable with clean attribution
Each has a different risk profile for both sides. Retainers suit compounding channels; projects suit fixed deliverables.
Variable 7 — Reporting, tools and attribution
Proper measurement costs time: GA4 configuration, conversion tracking, call tracking, CRM integration, dashboards. Skipping it is cheaper and leaves you unable to tell what worked.
How to compare two proposals fairly
Line them up against these questions:
1. What exactly is delivered each month, in countable units?
2. Who does the work — is the person on the pitch the person on the account?
3. What is the measurement plan, and which metrics define success?
4. What happens in the first 30, 60 and 90 days?
5. What is the notice period and who owns the accounts and assets?
6. Is media spend separate from fees?
An agency that answers these clearly is easier to work with than one that quotes a lower number for an undefined scope.
Budgeting sensibly
Work backwards: target revenue, average order value or deal size, close rate, required leads, expected cost per lead. That produces a defensible number. Then decide what proportion goes to foundation work versus ongoing growth.
Our SEO, Google Ads and Meta Ads engagements are all scoped this way.
