Why Shopify is the default for ambitious D2C, and where it goes wrong
Shopify dominates D2C ecommerce because the trade-offs are right for most brands: a hosted, secure, scalable backend with an ecosystem of payment, shipping, marketing and operations apps that would take years to build in-house. The platform handles the boring-but-critical parts (PCI compliance, uptime, payment infrastructure) so brands can focus on product, brand and growth.
Where Shopify stores go wrong is the theme and app layer. A popular off-the-shelf theme loaded with 15 apps quickly becomes a slow, conversion-leaking, SEO-throttled experience. Page weights balloon. INP collapses on mobile. App scripts conflict. Customisation becomes painful. CRO experiments slow to a crawl.
Uddhavo builds Shopify stores with the same engineering discipline we'd apply to a custom React build: lean themes, audited app stacks, performance budgets, proper schema and a clear path to headless if and when the brand outgrows Liquid. We work in Shopify, Shopify Plus and headless setups (Hydrogen, Next.js + Storefront API) depending on what's actually right for the brand.
