Ecommerce SEO for Indian Brands: A Category-First Guide

Category pages are your revenue pages

Most Indian D2C brands invest their SEO effort in blog posts and product descriptions, then wonder why organic revenue is flat. The searches that carry buying intent — "cotton kurta set", "sports shoes for men", "organic tea online" — are category searches. Category and collection pages are what should rank.

Get the category layer right and everything else compounds.

Build the architecture around search demand

Map your keyword research to a hierarchy, not to your internal catalogue logic.

    • Top level: broad category — Tea
    • Second level: type — Green tea, Black tea, Oolong
    • Third level: attribute filters worth indexing — Darjeeling first flush, Organic green tea
    • Product: individual SKU pages

Index only the filter combinations with real search volume. Everything else gets a canonical to the parent and a noindex. Uncontrolled faceted navigation is the number one cause of index bloat on Indian ecommerce sites — Google's own guidance on faceted navigation is worth reading in full.

    Make category pages worth ranking

A grid of products with no text will not outrank a competitor with context. Add:

    • A short, useful intro above the grid — 80 to 150 words, not keyword soup
    • A longer buying guide below the grid
    • Internal links to sub-categories and top products
    • FAQ block answering sizing, delivery, returns, care
    • ItemList and BreadcrumbList structured data

    Product pages: unique, specific, structured

    • Original copy — never the manufacturer's description verbatim
    • Real specifications in a table crawlers can parse
    • Product schema with price, availability, and review data only if genuine
    • Genuine customer reviews with photos
    • Related and frequently-bought-together internal links
    • Clear handling of out-of-stock: keep the URL, show alternatives, never 404

The technical checklist that actually matters

    1. Core Web Vitals — LCP under 2.5s on mobile 4G; compress images, lazy-load below the fold, defer non-critical scripts

    2. Crawl budget — block cart, checkout, search results and infinite filter URLs in robots.txt

    3. Canonicals — one canonical per product across all category paths

    4. Pagination — self-referencing canonicals, crawlable links, no JS-only "load more"

    5. Sitemaps — split by products, categories and content; keep lastmod honest

    6. Structured data — Product, Offer, BreadcrumbList, Organization

    7. Internal search — noindex the results, but mine the queries for new categories

Our SEO service and website development teams run this as a single workstream, because half of ecommerce SEO is engineering.

    Content that supports commerce

Blog content should feed category pages, not compete with them. Write comparison guides, how-to-choose guides, care and maintenance content, and seasonal gifting guides — each linking into the relevant category with descriptive anchor text.

    Measure revenue, not rankings

    • Organic revenue and organic conversion rate
    • Revenue by landing page type: category versus product versus blog
    • Indexed page count versus pages receiving clicks
    • Non-brand organic sessions
    • Assisted conversions from organic

Tie it all into GA4 with ecommerce events configured properly. Rankings without revenue attribution is a vanity report.

    Marketplaces versus your own site

Amazon and Flipkart give volume; your own site gives margin, data and brand. Run both, but make your own site the destination for repeat purchase — email, WhatsApp and loyalty are impossible on a marketplace.
