Local Citations and NAP Consistency: The Boring Work That Wins Local Rankings

    What a citation actually is

A citation is any online mention of your business name, address and phone number — with or without a link. Directories, chambers of commerce, industry associations, news mentions, event listings. Google uses them to corroborate that your business exists, where it is, and how established it is.

Citations are a prominence and trust signal. They rarely produce a dramatic jump on their own. They routinely explain why a well-optimised profile refuses to move.

NAP consistency: the rule that breaks most businesses

Your Name, Address and Phone must be identical everywhere. Not similar — identical.

These are all different businesses as far as a matching algorithm is concerned:

    • Uddhavo Digital Marketing Agency, CR Das Sarani, Hakimpara, Siliguri
    • Uddhavo Digital Marketing, C.R. Das Sarani, Hakim Para, Siliguri
    • Uddhavo Agency, CR Das Sarani, Siliguri - 734006

Pick one canonical format. Write it down. Use it on your website footer, your contact page, your Google Business Profile and every listing you ever create.

The directories that matter in India

Start with the high-authority general set:

    • Google Business Profile — the anchor
    • Justdial and Sulekha — high traffic, high trust in tier-2 India
    • IndiaMART and TradeIndia — essential for B2B and manufacturing
    • Bing Places and Apple Business Connect — small volume, easy wins
    • Facebook and LinkedIn company pages
    • Clutch and similar review platforms for services and agencies

Then add vertical directories: Practo for healthcare, Zomato for food, MagicBricks and 99acres for property, Shiksha for education, TripAdvisor for tourism.

Then local: Siliguri Chamber of Commerce, North Bengal business associations, local news directories, college and event partner pages.

How to build citations without wasting months

    1. Audit first. Search your phone number in quotes and your business name in quotes. Log every result in a sheet with the URL, the NAP shown and whether it is correct.

    2. Fix the wrong ones before creating new ones. A duplicate listing with an old phone number does more damage than a missing listing.

    3. Claim, don't just create. Claimed listings can be corrected later; unclaimed scraped listings cannot.

    4. Add depth. Categories, description, hours, photos, website link. A thin listing is a weak citation.

    5. Re-audit quarterly. Directories re-scrape and re-introduce old data.

Duplicate listings: find and kill them

Duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google. Search Maps for your name, your old name, your phone and your address. Report duplicates through the Google Business Profile interface and merge where possible.

What citations will and will not do

Will: raise local pack confidence, drive direct referral traffic from Justdial and IndiaMART, support entity recognition, and help Google connect your brand across the web.

Will not: rescue a business with no reviews, a slow website, or the wrong primary category.

Citations are the foundation layer of our local SEO service. They pair with the Google Business Profile guide — profile first, citations second, reviews continuously.

A simple standard to adopt today

Create a one-page NAP standard document: exact legal name, exact address with pin code, one primary phone in one format, one email, one website URL, primary category, and a 200-character description. Give it to anyone who ever creates a listing for you.

That single page prevents most local SEO problems before they start.
